Mobile robot safety now has a rulebook for everyday use

The last part of the U.S. industrial mobile robot safety series is about what the site does after the robot arrives.

The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) has completed its three-part safety series for industrial mobile robots. The new third part of ANSI/A3 R15.08 is written for the people who run these robots day to day, not for the companies that build or install them.

According to Quality Magazine's report on the release, Part 3 covers keeping risk acceptable through ordinary operation and over the life of the equipment: risk assessment, managing changes, training, and periodic reviews and inspections. It was developed alongside Part 3 of the R15.06 standard for fixed industrial robots, so a site running both kinds of robot gets consistent guidance.

Why it matters on the floor

A fixed robot arm stays inside its cell. A mobile robot carries its hazards down the aisle, past people who may not be watching for it. In an A3 webinar summary, A3's standards lead Carole Franklin made the point that safety is not a one-time step finished before the robot goes live; it has to be managed as the system is operated, maintained and changed.

That matches what most safety teams already see. The risky moments tend to come later: a new rack in a travel lane, a top module bolted onto the robot, a route change for peak season, a sensor that slowly drifts. Each can introduce a hazard the original assessment never considered.

A short checklist to take from it

  • Treat every layout or payload change as a trigger to revisit the risk assessment, not just a maintenance ticket.
  • Put the robot's stopping behavior, speed limits and protective stops on the periodic inspection list.
  • Train the people who share the aisles, not only the operators.
  • Keep the information from the robot maker and the installer in one place so the site team can find it.

The standard itself is sold through A3. The summary above is based on the public reports linked below.
